Emperor Penguin

Introduction

The Emperor Penguin is the tallest and heaviest penguin. This penguin is part of the flightless bird family. The Emperor Penguin inhabits Antarctica and can live in very extreme conditions where the cold would be unbearable for most species to live in.

Looks 

Emperor Penguins body's are black on the back and on it's side. It has a white belly and a pale yellow breast. The Emperor Penguin has bright-yellow ear patches and a pointy black beak which has a bit of pink on each side. It has a tail with feathers and two black flippers on each side of its body. The Emperor Penguin can grow 122 centimetres in height and weighs between 22 to 45 kilograms.

Diet

The Emperor Penguin is a carnivore. It lives on a diet of mainly fish and squid. Fish is normally the most important food source.

Movement

The Emperor Penguin waddles like all penguin do.

Predators 

Some predators of the Emperor Penguin are Skua birds, Leopard seals and Orca whales. Some predators only eat the eggs.

Diving

The Emperor Penguin can dive to a depth of 535 meters and can remain underwater for 18 minutes.

Life Cycle

• January till March is feeding time
• April- the Emperor Penguin march 60-100 miles to rookery
• May- in May the Emperor Penguin mates
• June and July- male Emperor Penguins incubate the eggs
• August- the eggs hatch
• September and October- the adults feed the chicks
• October and November- the Emperor Penguin chicks form groups to stay warm
• December- the Emperor Penguin leave their chicks and the ice breaks up.

Conclusion

The Emperor Penguin is classed as endangered for they will have lost half their population by the end of this century. They are being threatened by the climate changes. We should all change the way we live and stop the climate changing.
